On April 20, 2023, SpaceX conducted its long-awaited first orbital text, launching the largest and most powerful rocket ever built. However, the outcome was somewhat unexpected. Of the 33 Raptor engines powering the Superheavy, three failed to ignite initially. Notably, one of these was a central engine, critical for in-flight corrections. As the launch progressed, two additional engines malfunctioned. This resulted in a striking visual from below: the functioning engines formed a circle of light, but the failed ones remained dark. The test was widely regarded as a failure when, a few seconds later, the spacecraft exploded. Despite these unforeseen setbacks, it's important to remember that SpaceX had already tempered expectations, acknowledging the slim likelihood of complete success. The primary goal was to gather data and learn from the rocket's performance.
On November 18, 2023, Starship's second orbital test took place. Although it also ended in failure, it marked a significant improvement: there were no engine failures during launch, and the issues from the first test had been addressed. Even though the flight didn't go as planned, the insights gained by the engineering team were invaluable, paving the way for future enhancements. As of now, Starship has yet to achieve Earth orbit. However, there is little doubt that it will play a pivotal role in returning humans to the Moon and, eventually, in reaching Mars.
